Beaminster

This picturesque small town (pronounced variously as ‘Bemster’ or ‘Bemister’ by locals) is set in a natural amphitheatre of rolling green hills, and centres on a large square with a covered market cross. Although it was sacked during the Civil War and subsequently suffered two major fires, it retains old-world charm in its colour-washed and stone houses, individual shops and eating places, a fine 15th Century church, and a local Museum.

Set at the head of the secluded Brit valley which leads to the sea at West Bay, there are many fine walks to be had, and if you fancy accompanying a llama or a donkey as your trekking companion, this can be arranged locally!

If you are interested in art and craft, a visit to the Broadwindsor Craft and Design Centre will be in order. Just up the road from Beaminster, it features individual artists’ studios as well as a number of gift shops and a café. Perhaps the best known is Earth Design – a treasure trove of crystals, minerals, jewellery and stone carvings.
